Ogden Mustangs forward Diego Contreras will return for his second season with the team in 2019-20.

Contreras joined the Mustangs midway through the first half of last season. At 16 years old, he was the youngest player on the roster. Now a year older, two inches taller and 10 pounds heavier, Contreras is ready for a new season ahead.

“I’m just excited to get back with the boys and make it happen this year,” Contreras said. “I want to play a bigger role now that I’m more experienced with junior hockey, and I have some high expectations for myself this season to help the team to a championship and win it this year. Mostly, I’m very hungry to get back on the ice and get after it.”

Contreras had two goals and five assists for nine points in 21 games last season. He paid his dues as a rookie and took opportunities as they came to him, filling in for injured or resting players, and getting more ice time in games against weaker opponents. But he made the most of his opportunities.

From Layton, Utah, Contreras stands at 5-feet-11-inches and 160 pounds, and was born in 2002. He’s got good speed and good hands and sees the ice well. He has a high hockey IQ and is able to find scoring areas well. He’ll have three more seasons of junior hockey eligibility remaining after this season.

Contreras is the eighth returner from last season’s team whose return has been announced, with still more to come. He’s the fourth player from the state of Utah on this season’s roster. He’ll be reuniting with his former Viewmont High School teammate Nick Garza this season.
