The Ogden Mustangs went 1-2 in Las Vegas this week at the Western States Shootout.
On Tuesday, they fell 3-2 to the Oklahoma City Blazers. The Mustangs battled back to tie the game twice. Despite a valiant effort late, they couldn’t do it a third time. Matus Spodniak and Rhett Rampinelli had the Ogden goals. Daniel Pavlicko had some huge saves in goal.
On Wednesday, the Mustangs again came back to make things interesting late, but the El Paso Rhinos won it 4-2 with an empty netter. Jacob Laurin and Bryson Bartell had the goals. Pavlicko allowed three again in the loss.
On Thursday, the Mustangs ended their slate of games on a high note, this time completing a comeback. Down 2-0, the Mustangs scored five straight goals and ended up winning it 6-3 over the Valencia Flyers. Ian Currie had two goals. Ross Bartlett had a goal and two assists. Hunter Hansen had the game winner. Jon Chin picked up the W in goal.
The win broke a four-game losing streak overall. The Mustangs avoided dropping five straight for what would’ve been the first time since the 2012-13 season.
The Mustangs now hit a holiday break, ending the first half of the season with a 22-8-1 record. They sit a single point ahead of the Utah Outliers for first place in the Western States Hockey League Mountain Division and just two points up on the Colorado Jr. Eagles. The Mustangs are tied for third overall in the league.
The second half of the season begins Jan. 5-7 when the Mustangs will hit the road to face the Cheyenne Stampede. The following weekend, Jan 12-14, the Mustangs will be at home to face the Casper Coyotes.
