The Ogden Mustangs and Wichita Jr. Thunder battled in a game that went down to the wire Saturday night at The Ice Sheet, with the Mustangs just falling short.

Wichita’s incredible run of 22 straight games without a regulation loss continues, and they will advance to the championship game to face the Idaho Jr. Steelheads at The Ice Sheet tomorrow. 1:30 p.m. puck drop.

Saturday night’s game featured an incredible comeback from the Mustangs at the beginning of the third period, scoring goals with 13:27 and 11:02 remaining to go up 2-1.

The Thunder then mounted a comeback of their own, with their captain Jack McLelland scoring with 9:08 left to tie the game again, silencing an Ogden crowd that was fired up.

McLelland then scored again with just 1:47 left and then he also scored an empty netter with four seconds on the clock, for the natural hat trick, putting his team on his back.

The Mustang goals came from Matus Spodniak and Zeke Zeier. They outshot the Thunder 57-28 in the game.

In the other semi-final game, the Idaho Jr. Steelheads defeated the Valencia Flyers in another low-scoring, tight checking game. The Steelheads dominated in shots on goal, and the Flyers just ran out of gas with a number of players battling through injuries. For Idaho, it’s their seventh straight trip to the WSHL championship game.
