The Mustangs are proud to announce the signing of star Defenseman Benji Rutkai for the 2022-23 season. Rutkai spent last season in the tier 2 ranks splitting time between the Minot Minotauros NAHL and Weyburn Red Wings in the SJHL.
“The coaching staff was persistent in their approach which made me feel wanted. They made it clear how I will fit in the program and benefit the team. After playing for multiple tier 2 programs and seeing what Ogden has to offer, it was a no brainer for me.“
Coach Orlando is stoked to work with Benji this season, “We’ve been on Benji for the last couple of years. Watching him from a far and seeing him mature as a player, we’re ready to fine-tune his game and prepare him for the next step in his career.” Kenny continues, “We see him being a main piece in our back end all year long.”
Benji’s analysis of his own game is, “An offensive defenseman who makes quick puck plays and someone who can contribute at both ends of the ice.” Having players on the back end that can chip in on both halves of the ice is vital to the Mustangs staff. It fits the fast and skilled brand of Mustang hockey that has been on the ice for years.
Rutkai has been on Coach Orlando’s radar for the last 3 seasons as Kenny watched Benji closely when coaching for the Austin Bruins NAHL in 2019-2020. Since then, Rutkai has built an impressive two-year resume with the U18 AAA Anaheim Jr. Ducks and carved his way through the junior ranks last year with solid experience.
“I want the Mustangs to be hard to play against, have a deep playoff run, and potentially earn a National Championship.” Rutkai concludes.
