The Southern California-native found the passion for ice-hockey from his father who works for the Anaheim Ducks. Looking forward, Mater is excited to lace up the skates for Weber saying, “WSU has a really great program. We went to a couple of their games during the year and it helps that I played for the Mustangs since they’re in the same building.”
Cory will be missed in the Mustangs lineup. He had a knack for creating offense whenever he was on the ice. “You go to practice, you work hard, and you get to play the minutes you deserve. Coach Kenny took his time with me, helped me, and improved my overall game.”
Coach Orlando states, “It was a pleasure having Cory on our team this season. We knew right away that he would fit in well with our group of guys. Cory’s focus on rounding out his game and becoming a college hockey player motivated him this year. His patience and trust in our development process was key in the success that he had with our team. Cory is a very coachable player which made things easier for him and the staff. We congratulate him on continuing to get to play hockey while perusing an academic career in communications.”
Fans in Ogden connected well with Cory, “The Ogden fans are electric. I played against them the year before and absolutely hated it. Finally being on their side, it felt like I was actually playing at a professional game. It gives me chills just thinking about it again.”
In Mater’s one-year stint with the Mustangs, he posted 10 goals and 10 assists in 44 games.
When asked how he would like the fans to remember his time with the Mustangs, Cory says, “On-ice goals, points, all that stuff is great but I want to be remembered for the off-ice interactions with fans and just being a lovable guy.”
This fall, Mater will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications with a Minor in Sports Management at WSU. Best of luck, Cory!
