OGDEN, UT. – The Ogden Mustangs, proud members of the United States Premier Hockey League, are excited to announce the signing of Cory Mater for the 2021-22 season.
Mater (Anaheim Hills, CA) joins the Mustangs after an exceptional rookie year in the USPHL Premier as a member of the formerly known Anaheim Avalanche (now Long Beach Shredders). The talented scoring winger will be injected into an already high-octane group for the upcoming season after playing against Ogden in 20-21. His instant chemistry with Jake Meure and Bryce Miller was on display throughout the Mustangs Tryout Camp in July as Team White rolled to an undefeated weekend.
"Playing in Ogden last year and against the team was an awesome experience. It was certainly tough being on the opposing side but I’m happy to be a Mustang with an incredible fan base supporting."
The second Southern California native (Lewis Izadi) to join Ogden this Summer, Mater is officially listed at 5-8, 160 lbs for his age-out season. He led his former team in goals (16), assists (18) and points (34) in 30 games played. Amazingly, Mater received only one minor penalty last season and has only taken only 5 total penalties since the beginning of the 2019 season in 76 games played. Having a player of his caliber on the ice as much as possible is crucial and he does a fantastic job of ensuring that happens with his new team.
"For my last season of junior hockey I feel that it will help motivate me to try and win a championship with Ogden. Looking at the roster and how the tryout camp went I believe that we have a solid core group throughout the lineup. With it being my last season, I'm going to do whatever it takes to help the team win and be successful."
During Head Coach Kenny Orlando's first season, Ogden was able to navigate tough opponents, untimely injuries and roster changes all year long. Unfortunately, the playoffs were even more challenging in a stacked Mountain Division. Acquiring Mater gives the forwards additional flexibility, fluidity and strength throughout the lineup.
"Last season, Cory was a player that sparked our interest when we played against him. He has a knack for the net and his scoring abilities will supplement some of our playmaking forwards nicely this season. We are going to push him hard to round out his game and become a 200 foot player. Cory is a good fit with our current players and staff and we are happy he chose the Mustangs for his last year of juniors."
With one year to go in his junior career, Mater looks to make it his best year yet while achieving the ultimate goal alongside his teammates.
"I’m looking forward to play in front of a great fan base and develop my skills even more. I’m an offensive forward who can score and make plays to find open teammates to help our team win."
