OGDEN, UT. – The Ogden Mustangs, proud members of the United States Premier Hockey League, are excited to announce the signing of Tate Jenson for the 2021-22 season.
Jenson (Millville, UT) was perhaps the unsung hero of the highly-touted defensive group in 2020-21. His defensively responsible playing style led to a breakout season for the local talent. The return of Jenson along with Jack Jones gives the Mustangs two key foundational pieces on the backend already for next season.
"It feels great [to return]. Last year was one of the best years of hockey I've ever had! I can't wait to be able to get back to playing in front of the best fans in the league!"
While only registering 9 points in 42 games, Jenson's body of work is much like that of now former Captain and teammate, Christian Phinney: A committed effort in the defensive zone while sacrificing individual offensive output. Jenson only found the back of the net twice in 20-21, however, one was perhaps goal of the year for Ogden. His Mario Lemieux-like rush down the ice and finish flashed the offensive side of his game that hasn't quite showed its face just yet.
"As of now, my Summer training has remained the same: Getting to the gym and getting on the ice as much as possible throughout the week. The only change will be the mental mindset. Last year was a learning year; I didn't know what to expect. Now, I do know and I've been preparing myself day and night to go all-out."
Head Coach Kenny Orlando shares his thoughts on the return of his reliable defenseman.
“Getting Tate back instantly improves our defensive core. He's not flashy, but he’s one of our most consistent and reliable guys on the back end. His shot-blocking abilities and decision-making skills with the puck will help him see success early in his second season with the Mustangs.”
Jenson's sights are set on continuing his ascent as a shutdown defenseman for the red and blue. He also gave a preview of the expectation in the locker room already in place.
"Next season, you can expect the same player who is willing to jump in front of a slap shot from the blue line or really do anything to that puts the team first. For the team, you can expect us to pick-up where we left off last season and bring home a championship banner."
